Massachusetts Sales Tax “Fairness”

Andrew Payne

In case you missed it, H.1731 and S.1554 are winding their way through the Massachusetts legislature. But I object to these bills because they put Massachusetts at a competitive disadvantage in the emerging Internet economy, at a time when more entrepreneurs are eyeing NY and CA for new companies, instead of MA. These bills attempt to make large vendors like Amazon subject to state tax, by arguing that MA-based affiliates create an in-state presence.

How Massachusetts Tried To Fleece Its Technology Sector With “Tech Tax”

Massachusetts needs money. But Massachusetts looked at its burgeoning technology sector and thought that it could squeeze at least $160 million a year out the Commonwealth’s startups and established technology firms for funding of a transportation bill. So, the Massachusetts “Tech Tax” was born. And, for once, the Massachusetts legislature listened. Tech Tax Hurt Massachusetts Innovation. Massachusetts Tech Companies Need Protection.

I lived at ADP at 351 Massachusetts Avenue for four years as an undergraduate at MIT. My first company (Feld Technologies) used 351 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139 as my office address for the first few years of its life (I officially started the company as a sophomore, although my partner Dave Jilk joined me shortly after I got my undergraduate degree.) Yup – same bar – this was 1990-ish – and it was at 321 Massachusetts Avenue.

Time for Massachusetts to Pass Education Reform

This week, the Massachusetts Legislature is about to vote on a bill to (finally) reform education in Massachusetts - to lift the cap on charter schools, empower commissioners to reform the worst-performing schools and create "Readiness Schools" that get around the usual bureaucracy and drive towards academic excellence. And those of us who are passionate about the Innovation Economy in Massachusetts are too busy to hang around the State House and lobby.
