A Hack for Technical Interviewing

ReadWriteHack ReadWriteWeb Channels ReadWriteStart ReadWriteBiz ReadWriteEnterprise ReadWriteCloud ReadWriteHack ReadWriteMobile International ReadWriteBrazil ReadWriteChina ReadWriteFrance ReadWriteSpain ReadWriteHack Home Archives More Articles & Blogs RSS Twitter Facebook A Hack for Technical Interviewing By Pete Warden / October 29, 2010 10:00 AM / Loading Comments Tweet This post is part of our ReadWriteHack channel, which is a resource and guide for developers. The channel is sponsored by the Intel AppUp Developer Program. As youre exploring these resources, check out this helpful resource from our sponsors: AIR for AppUp: What You Need To Know Finding strong programming team members is really hard. Unless youve already worked with someone, its tough to assess how strong a contributor theyll be. Technical tests only show technical ability, and good people can often pick up those skills on the job, whereas jerks can have encyclopedic knowledge but destroy productivity. At Apple they gave us classes on interviewing candidates, and the number one technique they recommended was drawing out past experiences in great detail. Start your questions with " Tell me about a time when. ", and follow up on that with even more specific questions. For example when I was interviewing for people whod be working heavily with OpenGL, Id always ask " Tell me about a time when you ran into a graphics driver bug ". If theyd never run into that sort of problem, then Id know their experience was pretty superficial. If they had, their initial description would usually be pretty high level, but Id drill down into the details; " Tell me about how you narrowed down the cause ", " Tell me about the other people you turned to for help ", " Tell me about the solution you came up with ". The power of this approach is that its really hard to avoid revealing a lot when youre forced to describe past events in detail. If youve inflated your role or experience on your resume, talking about what youve actually done will correct that impression. If you cant describe how you worked together with colleagues to track down that driver bug, then youre probably a lone-wolf programmer. If you keep harping on the uselessness of everyone else involved, then Ill guess youre a misanthrope. Interviewing is a tough skill to learn and theres a lot more to it than this, but if you can remember " Tell me about a time when. " then youll be off to a good start! A Word on AJAX You seemingly can’t launch a new web site these days without using a few dollops of AJAX here and there. However, you can’t incorporate AJAX into your mock-up, as there’s no functionality. Where there is a functional requirement for AJAX, you’ll need to use a new page in your mock-up (the complete opposite of what AJAX gives you). Therefore you need to explicitly include your AJAX requirements in your functional spec.

The venture capital industry is facing real competition for the first time in decades. Not only that, but the growing battle between venture capital firms and “super angels&# presents an amazing opportunity for entrepreneurs trying to build the next big thing. All of this is according to Paul Graham, co-founder of the early-stage investment fund Ycombinator. During a presentation at Startup School at Stanford University earlier today, the prolific investor discussed the state of startup funding with a packed auditorium of students and entrepreneurs. Specifically, he said the funding world has been turned upside-down. So what’s causing this fundamental shift? The answer is the rise of super angels, Graham said. He explained that startup funding used to consist of relatively small angel investments ($20,000 to $50,000) from individuals or multi-million dollar investments from venture capital firms. In the middle of that was a gaping hole. That’s no longer true, thanks to a new class of investors known as the super angels. These investors usually raise a smaller fund and make investments into startups that range in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because they offer competitive investment terms and don’t usually demand a board seat, super angels have become major power players in the startup scene. Ron Conway’s SV Angel and Dave McClure’s 500 Startups are just two of the many examples of the super angel phenomenon. The sudden rise of prominence of the super angels has shaken the very foundations of the venture capital industry, according to Graham. VCs — who could before invest in a startup and get a third of the company in return — are now facing stiff competition from the super angel crowd. The result is that many venture capital firms are now making smaller angel investments in an attempt to get close with startup founders that are likely to raise bigger funding rounds later on. The YCombinator founder believes this means great things for entrepreneurs. The competition for funding startups is increasing the valuations of startups, giving entrepreneurs and founders better investment terms. Angel rounds also tend to close quicker. Graham sometimes wonders if this is the beginning of another bubble, but believes instead that the lines between super angels and venture capitalists will blur — you will see more VCs participating in smaller rounds and more angels participating in larger rounds. “The next few years will be a great time to raise money,&# Graham said. The competition between super angels and venture capitalists may be leading to a new golden age for entrepreneurship. How long that will last is another question entirely. View more jobs » Len Williams Angels, super-angels, venture capitalists and micro-VCs - they all have their advantages and disadvantages. There is, indeed, a competition between angel investors and venture capital firms, which can only be an advantage for entrepreneurs who are thus stimulated to choose wisely their future business partners. The positive aspect that should be emphasized is that there are funds, there is money out there waiting to be invested, it all now depends on each entrepreneur's vision, skills and ability to persuade investors that their business is worth investing. A lot of companies used angel investors money to get off the ground and subsequently turned to VCs for following rounds. Jeremy Campbell This is pretty sweet because more investor competition for deals is great for entrepreneurs! It's also very interesting to see that angel funding doesn't have to be just local anymore as (some) angels are willing to invest no matter where they and a company are located geographically. This all very fascinating, what a time to be an entrepreneur! Gregory Wehmeyer True, Ben, once upon a time, Angel Investors provided the launching pad for Venture Capital Firms to propel any startup on two legs toward a successful IPO. Fast forward to today's investment climate and you would be hard-pressed to find any VC who isn't frustrated by what they consider to be a shortage of IPO worthy deals. More and more VCs have deals in their portfolios that have long outlasted their investment value, and more and more VCs are seeking to unload these deals, at a loss, as reverse merger vehicles. Nearly all have abandoned hope in the "sure thing" and are stepping into what has traditionally been the Angel role of incubating startups. Companies like GrowPublic, Inc. are partnering with Angel Investors and Venture Capitalists alike to provide an alternative method of providing liquidity to initial investors and to increase the likelihood of future funding for their deals once those companies go public, through what we call an Early Stage LPO (Limited Public Offering). We are coaching VCs and Angel Investors everyday who call us wanting to understand our Early Stage LPO versus late stage IPO approach to business. Paired with our rapid incubation system for small cap private companies on their way to becoming public, as a FIRST step for growth funding, rather than as a last step for exit ROI, it's easy to see why the system we initially developed for Angel Investors is fast becoming a viable option for Venture Capital firms, as well. With an Early LPO, initial investment is a fraction of what it used to be for Angels and VCs to secure our services on behalf of their clients, in exchange for shares of the company, and the ability to invest further once their ticker symbol is live. Private equity investors who once shouldered the entire risk load associated with funding startups now enjoy 100% liquid investment, thanks to GrowPublic, increasing the likelihood that the company will be further funded and stock positions purchased by VCs or Angel Investors will be liquid in as little as 180 days, due to the fact that the company will be publicly traded. It's a unique approach, and one we'd love to discuss with entrepreneurs and their investment sources. Visit [link] / for more information. Club Intimate Are there any super angels in Australia?
