During one of the long conversations we had at the time about our future, we started talking about calling it quits and moving to Homer, Alaska. After selling my first company, I’d invested as an angel investor in a bunch of companies, was a non-executive Chairman / co-founder of a few, and had lots of ideas for new things to do.

As a startup founder, mentor, Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) member, I’ve witnessed far too many startups reach the end far too early. You wouldn’t want to market this item to people in Alaska, would you? No one enjoys hearing it, but three out of four startups will fail before they ever get to market. You hire the wrong people.

I met the co-founder Laura Oden when I was in Anchorage last month to speak at the Accelerate Alaska event. She described how she met her founders at Techstars Startup Weekend in 2016. When you think of Alaska, you probably do not think of it as a popular location for producing shoes.

At the time David Cohen, the co-founder and CEO, was unhappy with how angel investing worked. I remember sitting at my kitchen table in Homer, Alaska in July 2010 at 2am almost crying with frustration. It has a full time co-founder/CEO ( Dane McDonald ), just like Techstars was co-founded and run by David Cohen.
