No, it doesn't have to be perfect but it has to at least be conversational. Be it within the company or external with customers or partners, English may work. As I've had to answer this question so many times at this point, I thought I'd just save myself the time in the future and make a blogpost out of it.

Conversely, the things you measure well, with easily understood and visible metrics, tend to improve without much extra push. They keep the role neutral, like Switzerland, neither on the research side, nor on the operation side, but in between, like a mediator needs to be. It’s incredibly slow, because of all the stakeholders.

Through comment conversations with many of you I tried to emphasize that it isn’t enough to just have one attribute. He was from South America but living in Switzerland and had launched a startup while holding down a day job at a consulting firm (McKinsey if memory serves). Not long after the product launch we began the initial conversations with VCs for a Series A round. The terms and valuation for both offers were comparable and when the team debated which path to choose, we all agreed both firms would have made good partners. We three partners are working hard.
