The virtual office tools today are so impressive that you can source talent globally and simultaneously improve productivity while cutting costs–unthinkable 10 years ago. Some of the big ones are open source , cloud computing and virtual office infrastructure. In some cases costs today are 1/10 that of even 5 years ago.

When you outsource…at least in the early days…it matters little wheter you pick a local bank or a global one. In the valley or in Boston, lawyers will often *defer* up to $25K until funding in return for 0.5%-1.0% We tried to provide a framework for startups to think about what activities should be outsourced and why.

In 2007, launched “America’s Giving” challenge with Facebook and Parade magazine. Network for Good, Global Giving, Mission Fish (behind ebay’s GivingWorks). We’re not just focused on NY/Boston/Silicon Valley. We were seeing this movement towards causes on Facebook and elsewhere. We wanted to direct some of that energy.

We funded the first TechStars program in Boulder in 2007 with $230,000. We ran the second program in 2008, expanded to Boston in 2009, and adopted a funding strategy for each local program which we continue to use to this day. It dawned on me last night that as of tomorrow TechStars will have three programs running at same time with about 40 companies actively engaged in programs in Boston, New York , and San Antonio. Not including the active programs, 126 companies have gone through TechStars since we ran our first program in Boulder in the Summer of 2007.

Scott Kirsner of The Boston Globe called them the startup equivalent of the Justice League of America. Gail Goodman, CEO Constant Contact (2007 IPO). Ironically, the panel was conducted a day before an interview with Mark Zuckerberg, where he indicated that if he were starting Facebook now, he would have stayed in Boston.
