While our portfolio at NextView is roughly equally weighted to consumer facing and B2B companies, it seems that for consumer companies in particular being first mover confers little benefit and the drawbacks probably outweigh whatever weak advantage might exist.

15 years ago we were at the peak of Internet hype with the launch of many over-capitalized businesses with a market size & opportunity was limited. 50x more Internet users (2.4 2007 was the watershed year. Summary: Cheap, mobile, social, global, always-on, one-click-purchase =. Where are we today? and hasn’t abated.

When I first got into the industry it was 2007. I thought about things I never had to as an entrepreneur: check size, ownership percentage, deal stage, portfolio construction and risk. When the market tanked they had the “triage problem&# – which portfolio companies to save, which to kill. Yesterday was a Monday.
