Last week, for just the second time ever, I passed on an investment opportunity because of the terms of the deal--both the price and the legal structure of the agreement. Then, I read about the idiotic comments made by a co-founder of Rap Genius. They got that way due in large part to a very public founder friendly stance.

You race back to the office to tell everybody how well it went and you wait for the follow-up call to have a partners’ meeting or talk about term sheets or at least dip into due diligence. You had an amazing meeting with an investor. The dialog was great. They told you how much they loved your space.

Another VC called the co-founder & tech head – Parker Harris. The only real benefit of their having this information is in preparation for a term sheet. They can get at the most important information early on by simply asking you : How much of the company do the founders own? S**t rolls downhill.

I think this is a Seriously great example of how this process works for at least one VC – Upfront Ventures.
