The global financial crisis started in 2007 and it went on for much of 2008. Sachin Bansal and his business partner, Binny Bansal, launched an e-commerce site in India in 2007. He started it in 2009 with 10 employees and sold it to Susino Umbrella in 2014. This company’s valuation peaked at $10 billion in 2013/2014.

Writing up a contract is especially important if you’re working with co-founders. But we were shocked when, in December of 2014, the price of oil dropped, which caused an instant recession in our two biggest markets, whose currencies lost half their value overnight, essentially doubling our dollar-based prices for our customers.

This LP is also a long time investor in Union Square Ventures and was one of the first people Fred introduced us to when we started raising the first Foundry Group fund in 2007. In 2014, it’s easy to reflect on what has happened over the last seven years and feel good about it. But is wasn’t always this way.

For example, in 2006, we co-founded Techstars. At the time David Cohen, the co-founder and CEO, was unhappy with how angel investing worked. The Techstars Boulder 2007 program was an experiment – we had no idea if it would work. Our 2014 project is FG Press. Like Techstars, this is a new entity.
