Most of what I think about startup communities came from mentorship by Brad Feld through hours of private discussion and debate. Think Fred Wilson, Tony Hsieh or Brad Feld.

While Silicon Valley has grown to have global influence, in many ways the cultural leadership from the venture community has dramatically shrunk in the last decade. Let me start with the obvious baseline that most people probably know instinctively: Los Angeles is the 3rd largest technology startup ecosystem in the US. Many people don’t realize that the majority of the monetization of the Internet originated in Los Angeles but was perfected in Silicon Valley. LA By The Numbers.

But in Los Angeles, Santa Monica is akin to SoMa in San Francisco, Cambridge in the Boston area or Flatiron / Union Square in NYC. It is 12,000 sq ft of indoor /outdoor space and we’re building into a community work environment. We have long wanted to move but wanted to wait for the perfect space.

On Tuesday Los Angeles will elect a new mayor. He understands our issues as a community and vows to help keep LA Tech on the map. I’d love to see a mayor in Los Angeles who does, too. We can continue to innovate in LA or watch our jobs and our engineers move up North. LA needs Garcetti. Why it Matters.
