The browser and thus the WWW and the first Internet businesses were born circa 1994–95 and there was a golden period where anything seemed possible. Sure, we built SaaS products before the term even existed but at 31 it was hard to delineate reality from what all of the monied people around us were telling us what we were worth.

If you think back to the monster consumer software and internet companies that’ve been built in the last 2-3 decades, it’s actually far more likely they were fast and/or particularly innovative followers rather than first movers. Microsoft (OS – both text & GUI based, office productivity, game consoles).

Productivity – Microsoft Office. Productivity-Microsoft Office but the online apps are getting better and in fact for collaboration or sharing would consider Google Office apps like spreadsheets and writely. Yes, one problem is that all of the solutions I list above are dependent on having an Internet connection.

When Time Warner & AOL merged it was widely feared that this would be a monopoly that would control the Internet. For a nanosecond Rupert Murdoch seemed like the smartest guy on the Internet.
