The browser and thus the WWW and the first Internet businesses were born circa 1994–95 and there was a golden period where anything seemed possible. 2001–2007: THE BUILDING YEARS The dot com bubble had burst. We had nascent revenues, ridiculous cost structures and unrealistic valuations. There was no money train. It was 1991.

A 2007 poll concluded that 20% of all businesses would go out of business without the internet. It’s easy to assume that the vast majority of businesses would go out of business without the internet. People wouldn’t be able to work remotely, labor costs would be much higher, and it would be more expensive to get new customers.

it is also the title of a fabulous book from Internet 1.0 by Michael Woolf that is worth any startup founder reading to get a sense of perspective on the reality warp that is startup world during a frothy market such as 1997-1999, 2005-2007 or 2012-2014. High fixed costs + high debt rates killed many great companies in Dot Com 1.0.

As I started thinking about his question, I remember what it was like setting up our office in 1998 and the headaches and cost of buying a Nortel phone system and phones and hiring a Microsoft networking expert to get our office set up for file sharing, back up, and email. 15 years ago we were at the peak of Internet hype with the launch of many over-capitalized businesses with a market size & opportunity was limited. 50x more Internet users (2.4 Lower costs to start a business (95% reduction), many more companies created & funded by angels / seed. 2007 was the watershed year.
