The reality is that seed investing as a strategy was not a new thing back in 2011, and one could point to multiple prior waves where this sort of investing just didn’t work. There is significant economic value that is available to seed funds in the mid-late stage financing rounds of their companies where they have pro-rata rights.

I’ve talked about this trend before – specifically the acceleration of angel investing in 2011-2014. I’ve always felt that a robust angel financing market was important to startup ecosystems and the data on the next two charts really brings that home. I suspect that’s a bit of what we’re seeing here.
