Zeitgeist Half Marathon in Boise, Idaho

Feld Thoughts

I ran the Zeitgeist half marathon yesterday in Boise, Idaho with my friends Pam Solon and Mark Solon (Pam kicked our asses). I love America. It was a cold and icy morning with a beautiful blue sky. The course is hilly – a long two mile hile at mile 2 and then a one mile hile at mile 8. But following each hill was a corresponding downhill so that evened things out. The most awesome thing about a half marathon is at 13 miles you only have 0.1 mile left, not 13.2 miles.

Sorry Idaho, Employee Noncompetes Are a Scourge

Hunter Walker

NYTimes Conor Dougherty covers the use of employee noncompetes in Idaho as a weapon in the conflict between local existing companies and startups. What’s crazy about Idaho’s law is how far it tips against the individual. As Conor writes, Idaho “shifted the burden from companies to employees, who must now prove they have “no ability to adversely affect the employer’s legitimate business interests.””

What I Learned From The First Time I Was Fired

Feld Thoughts

Idaho spuds appeared magically in 50 pounds boxes and ended up in a dank, gross storeroom. I was fired from my first two jobs. Here’s the story of one of them, which first appeared as part of LinkedIn’s My First Job content package. Those were the last two words I heard from my boss after working for six months at Potatoes, Etc., my first real job. I smirked, immaturely threw my apron at her (I was 15 years old after all), and slammed the door on my way out.

Rural Broadband Necessary for Rural Innovation

Gregg Fraley, Author of Jack's Notebook

Philo Farnsworth, son of an Idaho potato farmer, came up with the key invention that enabled television — the video camera tube. It’s nice to see that people are recognizing that innovation isn’t always in Silicon Valley.

En route to the park we past through a little backwater town in Idaho where I spent my freshman year of college. A week or so back we surprised my father in-law with an 80th birthday celebration in Yellowstone Park. As we rolled down Main Street memories from that year came flooding back. The bank with the curbs we used to skate, the corner where a whole pickup truck full of cowboys tried to jump me for skateboarding said curbs, the dance club we clowned at nearly every weekend.

I grew up on a family potato farm in SE Idaho and I have a PhD in Engineering from Stanford (also known as The Farm).
