What this meant for entrepreneurs and VCs was a bit more complex– the IPO market was all but closed (with the Google IPO in 2004 as a brilliant exception), but it was possible find a buyer for your company. My experience of 2001-2004 is very remote from what you are describing.

The chart below illustrates this, with the black vertical line representing the average VC return. But what do we see from some of the more recent (but mature) vintages? Was this a lost decade for venture capital?

It’s perhaps an older example, but Bitpipe ( sold to TechTarget in 2004 ) did just that in becoming the largest distributor of IT white-papers which attracted CIO buyers. Often this focus can be on a specific geography or vertical. And with an audience of hungry buyers circling, supply is much easier fill.
